For College Parents
As a parent of a new college student, this too, can be the “best time of your life.”You don’t need to take this journey alone. Many parents often struggle with how to best serve their student during the college years. Their best time can seem like your most challenging time as a parent – it doesn’t have to be.
The support you give your college student is vital to their success. What if you could have an experienced coach on your team to help you and your child to be successful?
Some common questions parents often have are:
- What’s my role in this new chapter for my son or daughter?
- How can I support them, but not “do it for them?
- What resources does my student have to help them succeed?
- What should I do when they call and say, “I’m homesick and want to come home.”
As a former college life professional I’ve worked with thousands of families and students during this really important transition. Over the last 15 years I’ve helped students develop plans to be successful during their first year – and partnered with parents so they could coach their student to success. As a result of this work, I’ve created a coaching program for parents and college students.
You may have heard the term “Helicopter Parent.”This is not the kind of parent you want to be known as. Swooping in and saving the day causes a major failure to launch when graduation arrives. Now is the time to learn some new skills your self on:
- How to still be involved and a part of the college experience
- Why “surprise visits” only result in things a parent would rather not know
- How to negotiate the new Parent – Child relationship so a food fight doesn’t erupt at the first visit back home.
