Dreamlining – turning dreams into reality

by Jeff Stafford on March 15, 2009

I’m enjoying that first cup of coffee, reading on the couch and was besieged by a moment of inspiration. One that I’ve recognized in the past - and truly wanted to take hold of now.  While reading, The 4-Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferris, I wanted to try out an exercise he’s detailed about thinking unrealistically.  Should I be wasting my time on such trash?  Absolutely, yes!

If you, or I, want to achieve results we must become engaged and excited with our pursuits.  Dreaming and thinking unrealistically, for a change, are going to be the catalysts to make us change.  It’s the dreaming – with a timeline – that can inspire action.  The DOING piece of any worthwhile cause, that being you and ME!So, here it goes – go to the 4-Hour Work Week website to download a worksheet if you need some help.

1. What would you do if there were no way you could fail? If you were 10 times smarter than the rest of the world?     I’d write my own book on personal growth and success which would then parlay into a lucrative speaking and training career.  It would afford me the opportunities to inspire others, dream and achieve for myself and live a life full of possibilities.  These possibilities include lots of time on the tennis court, followed by luxury travel and explore the fantasy of photography. Once defined, Ferriss asks us to create 2 timelines.  One for 6 months. One for 12 months out and list up to 5 things you dream of having, being and doing (in that order).

Six Months -

Having:

1.       A paying consulting gig each month

2.      An extra $10K (or better!) in my bank account

3.      My book into the hands of people to offer up feedback and ideas

4.      4 vacations planned for the following year

Being:

1.       A disciplined writer with unique ideas

2.      A well-known consultant with speaking fees starting at $5K per day

3.      A muscular, fit man (living my results)

4.      Someone who inspires others to act

Doing:

1.       Plans to attend Wimbledon in 2008

2.      Decorating our addition

3.      Writing each day because the inspiration is instinctual

4.      Mounting a photo exhibit

5.      Playing tennis 4 times a week

Twelve Months -

Having:

1.       My book distributed and published nation-wide

2.      A plan in place to take my work globally

3.      A person to do my web and marketing updates

Being:

1.       A speaker known nation-wide

2.      Connected back to the college market as a speaker, trainer

3.      A consistent two-handed backhand hitter (tennis loves!)

4.      A great partner of 11-years

Doing:

1.       Vacationing regularly with Eric

2.      Attending a tennis camp in south Florida for a week

3.      Exploring Sedona in the winter

4.      Working on my own terms

5.      Dining with friends

Ferriss suggests if you’re stuck with not filling out the doing piece, give these a try to inspire your unrealistic thinking: One place to visit, One thing to do before you die, One thing to do daily, One thing you’ve always wanted to learn. This is just the first step.  Go at this, and next time we’ll move the being into doing!  After all, it’s about actionable items that will help you obtain the results you desire.
